ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA PARENT

Hello,

Allow me to introduce myself to you. I am Barbara Cloninger. I live in Mount Holly, North Carolina, with my family. We have two children, a 14-year-old daughter, and an 8-year-old son. I have been a stay-at-home mom for almost nine years, although last year I did work part-time at a local elementary school. I am also a senior at Belmont Abbey College and plan to graduate next fall (2001). I will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and am seeking licensure in the state of North Carolina. I would like to obtain a masters degree and national certification.

I have spent years volunteering at public schools, and feel terribly burdened when I walk into a public school. There is such a sense of stress. Anyone who walks into a public school can see the stress on the faces of administrators, teachers and children.

The idea behind North Carolina Parent is to provide information about educational materials so that when we do buy these materials for our children, we can feel reasonably secure that they will support our child's curriculum and hopefully be useful for several years. Lets face it parents, I buy reference books and educational software for my children in the hopes that it will give them the upper hand in school or help them where they are weak. Usually, I have no idea whether it will actually help them or not. I bet you do the same thing. One day I thought, "Why not evaluate these materials not only for myself, but for other parents also!" This thought gave birth to North Carolina Parent. My prayer is that this website, although small, will grow and that we as parents will grow also. As parents, we will grow together, to be able to make the kind of educational decisions that are so important today.
